Polartec introduces unified pre-dyed fabric option to streamline fleece production

Polartec, a Milliken & Company brand, has introduced Standard Issue, a unified pre-dyed fabric option initially available in black across its best-selling fleece platform. The initiative addresses inefficiencies in the production of one of the most commonly used colors in outdoor apparel and will be progressively extended across the wider Polartec portfolio, with additional colors introduced according to market demand.

The move responds to a long-standing industry challenge, where brands routinely order large volumes of fleece in nearly indistinguishable shades of black. Each variation typically requires a separate dye batch, minimum order quantity and production setup, adding time, cost and complexity without delivering meaningful visual differentiation.

By offering a consistent pre-dyed solution, Polartec aims to streamline manufacturing processes and reduce the resource burden associated with custom dyeing. The Standard Issue fabrics can be integrated into existing product development workflows, according to the company, enabling brands to simplify sourcing decisions and accelerate time to market while maintaining the durability, performance and reliability associated with Polartec materials.

Ramesh Kesh, senior vice president at Milliken & Company and business leader for Polartec, said the initiative challenges conventional thinking within the sector. He noted that Standard Issue presents an opportunity for brands to adopt a shared approach to producing a visually identical color, delivering practical benefits such as simplified development and more efficient global supply chain operations.

Karen Beattie, director of product management at Polartec, added that the development reflects the company’s tradition of addressing real-world challenges through material innovation. By providing a ready-to-use, consistent color option, she said design teams can move more efficiently from concept to production without compromising technical performance.

Standard Issue is intended to complement rather than replace Polartec’s existing customization capabilities, with brands retaining flexibility in design and product differentiation.

The rollout of Standard Issue across the Polartec range represents a step toward more efficient apparel manufacturing, offering brands a route to reducing complexity while maintaining performance standards.
